The xtal ball in the pics above
is called a Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder, the crystal ball (very expensive
but lasts forever) focuses the light onto the special card that is replaced each
day. There are different cards for summer, winter and the equinox periods and
they go into different slots in the brass section of the instrument.
If the sun is shining it will burn a narrow slit in the card and the number of
hours of sunlight is easily calculated. Works extremely well. No moving parts so
never wears out.
Therefore it is still in use. There is one on the Isle of man that has been in
use since 1876.
